In Godiva's Fair City

A poem in support of the Coventry 2021 City of Culture bid.

                                                       IN GODIVA'S FAIR CITY
Bombs rained down relentlessly on one November night
The level of destruction such a heartbreaking sight
But from the rubble the Phoniex City rose once again
With a spirit and defiance, nobody could ever tame
Hub of industry past and present, always reinventing
Pursuit of peace and reconciliation forever unrelenting
The remains of one cathedral and a new one so bold
Where the Spence's splendour mixes with the old

A metophor of springing from tragedy, a shining light
From all backgrounds people come to make a better life
Innovating and creating new arts and cultural themes
Inspiring the individual in pursuit of their dreams
To a place so steeped in history, desire and passion
Creating a lasting legacy beyond realms of fashion
Where Godiva rode naked for fairness and truth
Glows the Sky Blue flame of love's eternal proof
